Tomato Pruning

Picked tomatoesShould I prune my tomatoes to get more fruit?

Yes! Tomato pruning will help you get more ripe fruit, not just bushy plants. Although the shiny green leaves of your plants may seem breathtakingly beautiful, you aren't growing them for looks, but for the juicy tomatoes they can provide for you, and your family.

Healthy Eating this Summer

The ice cream truck, the pool snack bar, and the ball field concession stand are three rites of summer that children enjoy when the mercury starts to rise and the burgers and dogs begin sizzling on the grill. The only problem is, are we enjoying them a little too much? The U.S. Surgeon General reports that since 1980, the percentage of children who are overweight has nearly tripled. Over 8 million young Americans, or 15 percent of all children, are overweight. New studies suggest that one in four overweight children are already showing early signs of type II diabetes, and sixty percent already have at least one risk factor for heart disease. Often times the summer food that kids like to eat the most are the worst things for them to put into their bodies. Processed foods like prepackaged meats, frozen meals, and fast food are often high in sodium, saturated fat, and loaded with calories from fat. As a rule of thumb, only thirty percent of daily caloric intake should be from fat, and most of the time children are getting a much higher percentage from the food they are eating.

Poison Ivy & Brush Control

The safest and most efficient method to control poison ivy is to use an herbicide appropriately labeled for its control minimizing your exposure to the plant. Even after the death of poison ivy, gloves should be used to remove plant parts, because the leaves and vines are still toxic. Brush control herbicides are effective in controlling poison ivy. They can be used safely on poison ivy that is growing along wooden or stone fence rows or in home lawns. These compounds are sold as liquid concentrates, and must be diluted in water before spraying them on the poison ivy foliage. Check the label on the herbicide container to determine the proper mixing ratio.

Sticky Situation

Nothing designates spring’s arrival like walking barefoot on a lawn of lush, green grass. This pleasant experience can often turn into a painful, sticky situation with the presence of lawn burweed. Other names for this weed are spurweed and stickerweed. Lawn burweed (Soliva sessilis) is a winter annual that germinates throughout thin turf in the fall months as temperatures cool. It remains small and inconspicuous during the cold winter months. However, as temperatures warm in the early spring, lawn burweed initiates a period of rapid growth and begins to form spine-tipped burs in the leaf axils. The seed is contained within the hooked bur.
