Community Service

Through community service, youth can learn new skills, take on responsibility, become more aware of the needs of others, and learn the importance of being unselfish in their giving. Community service links students to the wider community and may expose them to people and situations outside their previous experiences. Service learning can also have a number of positive effects on young people including the development of leadership, communication, and organizational skills along with increased self-esteem. Youth can learn about the value of cooperating with one another and work as a team with diverse groups of people including adults, peers and others with unique backgrounds and experiences. Each of these aptitudes is extremely valuable for young people as they begin to apply for colleges and seek employment in the workforce. Research by the University of Minnesota Community Service-Learning Center currently suggests that participation in service learning opportunities encourages the development of the participants overall leadership, collaborative, and communication capacities. This study has also determined that those youth participating in community service will increase critical thinking and problem solving skills, which will likely benefit school performance and grades.

Lee County Library & NC Museum of Art present

Bark Shedding

For about a month now, I’ve been getting queries about oak trees exfoliating. That’s science talk for “the bark’s coming off.” Last year I had lots of calls on this and went with two specialists from the Forest Service to visit several sites. We were concerned about Hypoxylon canker, a fungal disease of trees and all trees were fine except one. Sometimes the shedding has been associated with a large number of caterpillars on the trunk, and I surmised woodpeckers were flaking off the bark to get to the lunch line. But caterpillars are not always involved.

Resolution in Support of Senate Bill 433

The Lee County Board of Commissioners adopted a Resolution in Support of Senate Bill 433   that permits any county board of commissioners the option to consider consolidating social services and public health administration based on community need. Click here to view resolution of support.  

Resolution in Reference to ABC Permit Applications

During the May primary a referendum to authorize the off-premises sale only of malt beverages and unfortified wine passed in most townships.  The authorized alcoholic beverages may be sold only after a proposed licensee receives a permit from the NC Alcoholic Beverage Commission. The Lee County Board of Commissioners approved the attached resolution designating the Capitain of the Lee County Sheriff's Office Narcotics Division as the official to make recommendations to the NC Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission on ABC Permit applications.
